Out of the Ashes

Following completion of the original painting, Turner created a version specifically honoring the New York Police Department. After reviewing the work, NYPD leadership requested the inclusion of their flag-raising to reflect the losses borne by the department. This version now hangs in the NYPD Museum, representing the department's sacrifice and service in the wake of September 11. The adjustment reflects Turner's willingness to listen, revise, and honor those most directly impacted by the events depicted.

When President George H. W. Bush viewed a print of Out of the Ashes, he requested a copy before final details were completed. During a formal meeting at the Bush Presidential Library, both George and Barbara Bush signed the print. After the signing, Barbara Bush quietly leaned toward Turner and said simply, "It's great art." The moment remains one of the artist's most meaningful affirmations, underscoring the work's historical and emotional resonance at the highest level of national leadership.

"It's great art."
