The Light of Freedom

The first of sixteen paintings commissioned by Joe Monnke of Rotisserie for Beef and Bird, The Light of Freedom was born from prayer and reflection. Unable to resolve the composition initially, Turner fasted and prayed before envisioning George Washington bent over the Constitution, illuminated by divine guidance. Figures behind Washington represent people across the world drawn to the freedoms secured by the document. The painting marks a turning point in Turner's career, where faith and historical narrative became inseparable.
